Early Encounters - The History Of Aotearoa - Hur1

Welcome Viewers to my blog,

As you saw in the title we are doing another NZ history this time its about he early early encounters with the European and the British. I got some things to share with you in this quick blog post. We just watched a video which told us about the early encounters in NZ. Lets get right through it.

The first European explorer who arrived in Aotearoa/NZ in 1642. The named of the explorer was Abel. He was greeted with the nga Maori alarming for an attack on their nga waka. They used shells which made noise if they blow to it. Abel happily greeted them with a their own alarm sounding thing which got them to fire a cannon. They got more nga waka and Abel got the biggest waka and they pulled up a white flag and ran away. They never saw new tech such as clothes, cannons and giant ships and more. He didn't want to harm the nga Maori so he left and nammed the land later on Nouvea Zealandia.

Years later after that event the British arrived with James Cook and Tu Paia as the chief navigator. He learnt how to speak Maori but it doesn't mean that they had a great time there. Sometimes Captain Cook would shoot nga Maori for self defence but some of them he just killed them on accident. Some of them wean't accident and he did it on purpose. He arrived on the year 1769.

Few years passed as the Europeans came back to Aotearoa. They came to trade some things and the nga Maori traded things back for the cool stuff like muskets and stuff. They came closer to the Europeans than they ever did last time in 1642 which got their biggest waka killed.

Some of you maybe wondering what is a masket? Its a infantryman gun that is light with a long barrel smooth-bored and fired from the shoulder. After that they started the musket wars which got many nga Maori killed. Some of the Maori still sticked to the old gear they used to use but it was unfair for them because the guns are too powerful for close ranged weapons and spears. The musket war ended longer than when they should have ended it. It ended in the late 1830s.

The ratio of Maori to Pakeha in Aotearoa/NZ in 1840 was 40 to Maori and 1 to Pakeha. Very low right?

Here is Abel the first European and first person to see Aotearoa for the first time in history.

  1. Another FANTASTIC effort Aaron. You've provided tons of information and included a great image of each explorer (Abel Tasman and Captain Cook). Check your spelling of musket (they fought Musket Wars, not masket ones!:-). Well done!
